Fall of the House of Usher and Rose for Emily Compare and Contrast
Comparison:
The setting of both stories are a gothic/dark environment Both of the main character keep to themselves and were isolated from society with minimal contact. The home of Emily and Usher's Mansion were both run down. Both Usher and Emily had a single living family member Usher had his sister Magdalene and Emily had Toby (who treated her as a family member). Both had a family member die from Usher Magdalene "died" and for Emily it was her father. After each of there respective family member die it begins a downwards spiral and a mental collapse. Emily and Usher both died in there stories and with there death ends there respective bloodline. Both of the ending were dark/morbid. When Usher died it symbolized the end of Usher name and with Emily death symbolizes the end of their generation.
Differences:
The setting is slightly different Fall of the House of Usher is all contained in the Mansion while A Rose for Emily does involve the town. The Fall of the House of Usher foreshadows Usher's death while A Rose for Emily Emily is already dead and count the event that happened. The Usher's descent want cause either by illness or possibly a haunted mansion while Emily was cause by her being keep isolated by her father. In a Rose for Emily, Emily is opposed to the society being headfast in her refusal, while Usher combat his disturbed mind and his illness.
